A little help along the way

Common questions

Cloud features may vary by app version.

Getting started

Do I need an account to use Dear Cairo?

No. You can write, record, add memories and use the optional wellness experiences without an account. If Account & backup is available in your version, Apple sign-in opens a separate account journal. It does not automatically upload your standalone journal.

Do I have to choose a mood or attach a photo?

No. Check-ins, prompts, photographs and journal-to-memory connections are optional. Open Journal and choose Write or Record. You can save an entry on its own.

How do I add or change my profile photo?

Open Settings (Your space), then choose Add photo or Change photo. Select an image using the photo picker. You can remove it from the same screen. A profile photo is optional.

Where are meditation and my mood calendar?

Open the Meditation tab for calming sessions and breathing. Mood history is available from Today through the calendar. You can skip a check-in or update your mood during the day.

Writing, recordings & memories

How do I write or record an entry?

Open Journal and choose Write or Record. Written entries have no set character limit, and you can keep multiple entries in a day. Writing saves as you work; finish with Done before leaving. Voice entries support recording controls, replay and optional notes. Stop and save a recording before relying on it as a saved entry or backup.

The microphone is not working. What should I check?

Check Dear Cairo’s microphone permission in your iPhone settings under Privacy & Security → Microphone. Allow access if you want to record, then return to the app. If the app is not listed, open Journal → Record to request permission. You can still write when microphone access is declined.

If a Bluetooth headset is connected, check which microphone and audio output your device is using. Stop and save an active recording before changing devices or closing the app.

How do I keep a photo’s caption or story?

Open Albums, create a memory book or open an existing one, then add a photo. Use the memory’s editing controls to add a caption, date and personal story. You can return to edit or remove a memory later.

Can I connect a journal entry to more than one memory?

Yes. Use the linking controls inside the entry or memory to choose the content you want to connect. Links are optional. Unlinking removes the connection and keeps the original entry and photo.

An affirmation sounds robotic or I cannot hear it.

Dear Cairo uses installed device voices for spoken affirmations, so the sound can vary by device and voice availability. Check the device volume and current audio output. You can always read the affirmation without listening. Tell us your device and iOS version if playback is not working.

Backups & recovery

How do I export a complete copy of my journal?
  1. Open Settings → Privacy & your data.
  2. Choose Complete native backup.
  3. Tap Export selected format and save it somewhere you trust.

A native backup includes supported saved content, media and links. Other formats export written journals as TXT or PDF, recordings, photos and captions, or memory books. Export files are unencrypted; keep them private.

How do I import a backup, photo, text file or recording?

Open Settings → Privacy & your data → Import or restore. Choose your file and review the preview before importing. Native Dear Cairo backups use JSON. Supported individual files include TXT, HEIC/JPG/PNG images and M4A/MP3/WAV recordings. Imports check for duplicates and add content without unexpectedly overwriting existing entries.

Why do I not see Account & backup?

That section appears only in app versions with cloud accounts enabled. Your journal still works locally. Export a Complete native backup for a separate copy; do not assume local recovery copies will survive deleting the app or losing the device.

How do I turn on cloud backup?

If available, open Settings → Account & backup and sign in with Apple. Decide whether to copy your standalone journal into the account. Then enable Automatically back up saved content or tap Back up now. Wait for a successful backup status before changing devices.

Automatic uploads run while the app is open and connected. They cover saved content, not unsaved drafts or recordings in progress.

How do I recover content on another device?

For a native export, use Import or restore on the other device. For an existing cloud backup, sign into the same Apple account, open Account & backup, refresh recovery versions and choose a version.

Merge adds recovered content alongside your current journal. Replace restores the selected version instead. Both cloud recovery options save a local recovery copy first. Check the restored writing, photos and audio before deleting your original copy.

My backup is waiting or says another device has changes.

Keep Dear Cairo open and connected to the internet, then check the status in Account & backup. Renew Apple access if the app asks you to sign in again. A notice about another device means a newer cloud version needs your review; merge the version to keep both sets of content before backing up again.

The current cloud backup limits are 50 MB per media file and 250 MB total media per snapshot. If a backup exceeds them, keep a complete native export. Do not delete your local content to troubleshoot a failed upload.

Privacy & deletion

Can I lock the app?

Open Settings → Privacy & your data and enable Require Face ID or device passcode. The app uses your device’s authentication. This protects access in the app; it does not protect exported files stored elsewhere.

How do I delete local data?

To remove the current journal and its local recovery files, open Settings → Privacy & your data → Delete all data on this device. Export anything you want to keep first and follow the confirmation.

This applies to the journal currently open. Standalone, account and presentation journals are separate. Local deletion does not delete cloud backups or previously exported copies.

How do I delete my account and cloud backups?
  1. Export anything you want to keep.
  2. Open Settings → Account & backup.
  3. Choose Delete account and cloud data, type DELETE, then confirm your Apple identity.

Deletion removes the account, its active cloud copies and its account files on this device. If the operation fails, follow the message and retry. It does not remove your standalone journal, separate exports or offline copies on other devices. Email us if you cannot access the account.

Does deleting an entry remove it from every backup?

No. Recovery versions can contain older copies even after an entry or photo is deleted. Cloud recovery versions remain until account deletion. Local recovery versions are separate and are removed by deleting the current journal’s local data. See the retention and deletion policy for details.

How do I make a privacy or data request?

Email hello@dearcairo.app and describe the request. If needed, we will ask for information to confirm you control the account. Please do not send passwords, verification codes, private entries or complete backups.
